To create my paintings, I explore the forest and take many high-resolution photographs. I photograph a scene several times, adjusting the focus to different depths. Later, in the studio, I use these photographs as a reference to guide my paintings. I always make adjustments to the compositions. Editing happens naturally as the image is transformed into a painting. My paintings appear realistic from a distance. The brushstrokes are clearly visible when viewed up close. Luke Nicol
Luke Nicol grew up on the north shore of Lake Superior in Canada. He has always been drawn to the boundary between water and land as a meeting place between two worlds. The boundless energy of great bodies of water provides him with elements through which to express a sense of the infinite.
Great waters offer something for every mood, from radiant light and shimmering surfaces to dark depths. In 2015, Luke Nicol moved to Turku, Finland, with his wife and their two children. He soon discovered a magnificent new subject in the Baltic Sea, allowing him to continue painting shorelines. Like Lake Superior, the Baltic Sea features strikingly sculpted rock formations that interact beautifully with light and water.
