Luke Nicol

Luke Nicol grew up on the north shore of Lake Superior in Canada. He has always been drawn to the boundary between water and land as a meeting place between two worlds. The boundless energy of great bodies of water provides him with elements through which to express a sense of the infinite.

Great waters offer something for every mood, from radiant light and shimmering surfaces to dark depths. In 2015, Luke Nicol moved to Turku, Finland, with his wife and their two children. He soon discovered a magnificent new subject in the Baltic Sea, allowing him to continue painting shorelines. Like Lake Superior, the Baltic Sea features strikingly sculpted rock formations that interact beautifully with light and water.
