Eija Zweygberg is a Helsinki-based textile artist whose works combine strong visual expression, the delicacy of craftsmanship and a playful spirit of experimentation. She trained as a textile designer and later as an interior architect, and draws her inspiration from architecture, interiors and various forms of art.
Zweygberg works intuitively – she ‘paints and draws with threads’. Her ryijy rugs often take shape spontaneously, leaving room for chance and allowing the material to express itself. Each piece is unique. The works make extensive use of recycled and surplus materials, making them a responsible choice as well.
Her small-scale ryijy rugs, known as ‘nukkapalat’, were created during a residency in Paris. They are accessible, expressive textile works that combine the softness of a ryijy with the precision of embroidery. Each ryijy is a handmade, unique piece.
