Eija Zweygberg

Eija Zweygberg is a Helsinki-based textile artist whose work combines a strong visual language, the sensitivity of handcraft, and playful experimentation. She trained first as a textile designer and later as an interior architect, and draws inspiration from architecture, interiors, and various forms of art.
Zweygberg works intuitively—she “paints and draws with yarn.” She works with ryijy, a traditional Finnish knotted-pile textile. Her wall hangings often emerge spontaneously, allowing room for chance and the expressive qualities of the materials themselves. Each piece is unique. She makes extensive use of recycled and surplus materials, making her works a sustainable choice.
Her small-scale ryijy pieces, known as nukkapalat, were first created during an artist residency in Paris. These approachable, expressive textile works combine the softness of ryijy with the precision of embroidery. Each is handmade and one of a kind.
