Anu Hakola is a visual artist and landscape architect originally from Helsinki who lives and works in Italy. In her paintings, Hakola explores the connection between the surrounding landscape and humankind. The landscape is presented as a metaphorical form of narrative, in which the boundaries between the inner mental landscape and the surrounding landscape dissolve into a porous interplay between them.

The ‘Evening Tales’ series explores the influence of the landscape and environment on sleep and the process of falling asleep. The paintings are stories in their own right, like bedtime stories, depicting the local Italian landscape and the points of convergence with the imagination it inspires; the liminal space between day and night, wakefulness and sleep. The boundaries of the evening soften; they open up from the confines of time into timelessness.
