About the work
The ‘Traces’ series is an exploration of imperceptible formations – traces left behind. The ceramic tile works bring together fragmented memories into cohesive landscapes. The grooves on the surfaces are like echoes of the past: fading traces of memory, mental landscapes and states of mind. A delicate, intuitive line brings to light observations of nature’s random compositions and subtle details. It transforms into a visual representation of the experienced and transports the viewer to the borderlands between the figurative and the abstract. Quiet moments are captured on the canvas, fragile and ever-changing. Underlying this is a desire to grasp the fleeting and to make the momentary permanent. The works are built on understatement, emphasising what often goes unnoticed: the layers of earth, the unadorned nature of the branches and the lingering movement of water. The air is thick with moisture.
Iines Niemelä (b. 1995) is a Helsinki-based ceramic artist and designer. In her ceramic tile works and reliefs, Niemelä explores themes of continuity, contrasts and fragility, reflecting her observations of nature and her understanding of time. Through clay, she structures, fragments and shapes her memories, whilst seeking connections between the past and the present. Contrast, challenging the material and the search for harmony play a central role in her artistic practice. Niemelä graduated from the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in 2022.
