About the work
Through a layered creative process, Milla Kuisma’s collage-like paintings often take shape as still lifes, landscapes, or combinations of the two. Her works bear traces of the passage of time and change. Recurring motifs include birds, plants, vessels, and abstract elements reminiscent of torn wallpaper. The paintings begin as a tangle of colours and marks, which Kuisma gradually unravels towards a finished image. Her painting process involves the joy of making, tolerating uncertainty, letting go, and discovery.
In her work, Kuisma plays with different marks and contrasts. At times, the paint is thin and translucent; at others, it is opaque. Alongside brushwork, she pours, washes, drips, and rubs paint onto the canvas, incorporating printed impressions into her painterly language.

Milla Kuisma
Milla Kuisma (b. 1980) is a visual artist who lives and works in Helsinki. Her still-life paintings explore impermanence. She constructs her collage-like paintings from multiple overlapping layers that conceal and reveal different stages of the creative process. Through painting, Kuisma examines the tensions between surface and depth, the organic and the artificial, and control and unpredictability.
Kuisma’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Finland. Her paintings are held in collections including those of the Finnish State Art Commission, Public Art Agency Sweden, and Helsinki University Hospital (HUS).
