Katri-Maria Huhtakallio (b. 1983) is a ceramic artist living in the countryside near Lohja. Her works are figurative depictions of animals and human figures, or elements of nature, inspired by humanity and emotions.
“My works arise from those sensations and feelings that I cannot put into words. Uncertainty, insecurity and a sense of incompleteness, but also hope or small moments of joy, form the starting point for my works. They are like diary entries about everyday feelings and experiences. If I could put them into words elegantly, perhaps there would be no need to create any physical artwork. When words fail me, the urge to create remains strong. I am captivated by the versatility of ceramics in creating different surfaces and impressions, as well as by clay’s ability to preserve traces, coincidences and textures. A ceramic surface invites you to touch it; it is soft and hard at the same time.”
Huhtakallio graduated with a Master of Arts degree from Aalto University in 2017. In addition to private collections, her works can be found in the collections of the National Art Commission and the Finnish Museum of Crafts, amongst others.
