Emmi Pakkanen
Emmi Pakkanen is a Finnish textile artist and visual designer. Since graduating with a Master of Arts degree from Aalto University in 2015, she has worked in textile art and surface design both in Finland and internationally.
Pakkanen describes herself as an archaeologist of forms and surfaces, combining an artist’s intuition with a designer’s methodical approach. Her artistic practice explores the dialogue between form, surface, material and colour, with a particular focus on the transformative nature of textiles.
Her works are primarily created through hand-knotting techniques rooted in the tradition of modern Finnish rya textiles, alongside contemporary and experimental approaches to hand embroidery. Through these techniques, Pakkanen explores texture, rhythm, colour and the relationship between structure and surface, creating distinctive textile works and visual worlds.
