Tuuli Kalliosalo

Tuuli Kalliosalo is a visual artist and ceramicist based in Sipoo. She holds a Master of Arts degree, and creates her works at her studio in Artborg 35, located in Jokipuisto in Nikkilä.

“My paintings often begin with a desire to explore current issues and phenomena that are personally important to me. My recent subjects have drawn inspiration from the local natural environment and my own garden. In addition to being beautiful, a garden can play an important role in supporting local biodiversity by providing food and shelter for birds and insects, for example. Trees and reflections are elements that have featured in my work for many years.

“In recent years, I have developed my ceramic practice in an increasingly painterly direction. The flower gardeners and fruit pickers featured in the exhibition blend naturally into the garden theme. They were inspired by my favourite childhood books, Tales of the Aunts by Swedish author and illustrator Elsa Beskow. The illustrations depict a world in which beauty is not presented as something superficial, but as a comforting force that elevates everyday life.

“The ceramic ladies also bear the influence of Henri Matisse’s work. Dressed in flowing, full-skirted gowns, they radiate gentleness and tranquillity—qualities that are much needed in today’s world.”
