Susanna Sinivirta is a Helsinki-based visual artist and illustrator. Her colour palette is characterised by earthy tones, and her work often explores nature, the changing seasons, and birds through watercolour and acrylic painting. She is drawn to birds for the trust in the future and the continuity of life that they embody, as well as their ability to live in the present and their sense of hope and resilience.
Sinivirta is fascinated by different textures, old textiles, and timeworn surfaces. She often creates her acrylic paintings with a palette knife, revealing forms by scratching into the painted surface. Layering and playfulness are defining features of her painting process.
As an illustrator, Sinivirta paints her images in watercolour. The final composition takes shape on the computer screen and often combines several images and layers, allowing the transparency and delicacy of the watercolours to come fully into their own. Sinivirta’s distinctive illustrations can be found in children’s books and on numerous cards that she has designed both for her own collection and for various brands.
