Niklas Ingelius

1992

Niklas Ingelius is a Helsinki-based artist who holds a Master of Fine Arts degree. He works primarily with constructed supports and painting. His practice centres on a prolonged painting process in which successive translucent layers of paint gradually create areas that appear to move both optically and organically.

“My work is guided by looking and discovery. The surface of a painting changes as it is viewed. As the gaze wanders through the web of painted marks, it continuously reveals and dissolves new areas and forms across the painting’s different layers. These forms combine into recurring patterns that permeate the painted surface.

“I create spatial surfaces within my paintings, building them layer by layer; a single work may involve as many as ten separate passes of paint. This complex network of painted surfaces creates an illusion of depth into which the viewer can become immersed.”

Works by Niklas Ingelius are held in the collections of Kiasma, HAM Helsinki Art Museum, the Saastamoinen Foundation, the Finnish State Art Collection, HUS Helsinki University Hospital, and Lahti Art Museum, among others.
