About the work
I paint in oils and acrylics, sometimes using pigments. Colour always carries meaning: hues such as red and blue hold historical symbolism. I have also worked with printmaking.
I paint the sky, land and sea, and sometimes pastoral landscapes. In a sense, all my works are fleeting impressions. Taking time to pause before a painting allows a sense of depth to emerge and may prompt questions: why are the trees red?
My narrative paintings may feature imaginary woodland creatures, fairies or abstract suggestions that take shape in each viewer’s eyes. What we see in these semi-abstract forms depends on our life experiences and emotional state.

Elina Melgin
Elina Melgin is a painter and holds a PhD. She has worked as a professional painter for around ten years and will graduate in fine arts from the Turku Arts Academy in 2027.
Melgin’s practice centres on two series. Wanderer’s Horizons consists of semi-abstract landscapes, while her narrative paintings draw on stories and beliefs. They explore the things we often take for granted that underpin our humanity, values and ethical understanding.
Melgin paints intuitively, and her varied background informs both her subjects and artistic expression. Some of her paintings contain references to art history and different historical periods.
