Eeva Mela is a Helsinki-based designer and pattern designer. The meteor glass sculptures got both the idea and their name from the star cluster called Feeniks. Mela is fascinated by the fact that the constellation of Feeniks hurls meteors into space twice a year: in the spring and at the turn of November-December. The meteor shower peaks on December each year, when up to a thousand Phoenician meteors have been observed being thrown into space in an hour.


Eeva Mela’s goal was to create a series of glass sculptures that follows the material properties of glass and the way it seeks form from the its own memory. The designer’s role is to help the glass be itself. The second task is to give the sculptures a purpose, a function, with the smallest possible gesture – that is the cultural dimension of the meteor series. The rest is to conceptualize the laws of the universe (such as beauty).


The glass sculptures are made using two techniques: colored glass mirrored on the inside and sandblasted on the outside. The glass sculptures were made at the Lasismi glass workshop in Riihimäki, and Eeva Mela’s designs were fulfilled by retired master glassblower Jaakko Liikanen, assisted by Kimmo Reinikka.
