The art of Helsinki-based Saija Varis is characterised by quiet observation and an appreciation of detail. The moments she captures in the lives of plants, animals and people leave room for the viewer’s own interpretations. She works in watercolour and ink, using fine-liner pens.

Animals have always been part of Varis’s life, including cats, dogs and horses. Nature is her most cherished source of inspiration: she prefers to wander slowly along side paths, observing her surroundings, rather than hurry along main roads. Her work echoes the forests of Finland and the landscapes of Scotland and Iceland.

Varis holds a degree in graphic design and a Master of Design degree from Scotland. Working as a senior creative and illustrator, she has 30 years of experience in advertising agencies in Finland and Iceland. She has also run her own business for more than a decade.
