In my oil paintings, both nature and the human figure are wrapped in the synthetic sheen of plastic. Its glossy surface evokes associations that are sometimes contradictory: isolation, suffocation, protection and inviolability. When a female figure is draped in plastic, familiar cultural imagery of veiled, mystical figures or saints comes to mind, bringing with it the various meanings of the veil and the act of veiling.
In the Roadside Arrangements series, the wild profusion of roadside flowers is enveloped in a glossy surface. The series began with an accidental arrangement I encountered while cycling: roadside plants mingled with discarded plastic litter, swaying together in the wind. I later created variations on this arrangement to serve as references for the paintings.
The paintings foreground a dialogue between inorganic plastic and organic matter, such as plants, raising questions about the relationship and coexistence between nature and human-made materials. Plastic symbolises the human imprint, the impact of industry and an unnatural permanence, while plants represent life, growth and the cycles of nature.
Sini Anttila-Rodriguez is a Helsinki-based visual artist and art educator. She graduated in fine arts from the Lahti Institute of Fine Arts in 2000 and earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 2007.
Anttila-Rodriguez works primarily with oil painting. Her paintings often explore the various, frequently contradictory cultural meanings that humans assign to nature. In her paintings, nature is often staged, artificial, altered or treated as a means to an end. Traces of human activity are always present in some form.
