Ceramic artisan Teppo Honkala is known for his unique functional pieces. His ceramics combine traditional craftsmanship with an earthy aesthetic. Their timeless forms and the lively surfaces of their wood-fired glazes reveal the essence of the material.
The pieces are made at the old Gunnari farm in Klaukkala, using tools Honkala has built himself, including a kick wheel and a wood-fired kiln. Wood-fired ceramics have opened up a fascinating way of life for him. Through working with his hands, the world becomes more humane—human in scale.
Only functional pieces are made in the workshop. When an object is used every day, a connection between maker and user comes to life. Through a handmade object, one person encounters another through the ideas embodied in it. This does not happen with industrially manufactured objects. It is about celebrating the meaning of everyday life and the importance of the moment through the age-old craft of ceramics.
