I planted a seed that cannot be unplanted

Pauliina Cross

800

Pauliina Cross is an abstract visual artist based in Helsinki. As well as her artistic practice, Cross works in brand management and visual design. Her work in both roles is strongly driven by a need to understand the people around her, their motivations and their feelings of togetherness or separation. Cross’s works can be found in private collections across both Europe and the USA.

By first applying layers of acrylic and then oil paints and oil sticks, Cross seeks to depict the inner architecture of emotions through colours, forms and the interplay and blending of these elements. His works display a geological, layered rhythm and texture, created through the use of various media, as well as sand and cold wax. Cross makes the frames for his works from light-coloured pine mouldings.

“This collection of works was created between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026. It has been my way of dealing with uncertainty, vulnerability and relying on others at a time when my own identity as a woman, a friend, a sister, a wife and perhaps also a mother has been caught in a storm. The themes of hope, courage and loss have featured heavily in my life, and they have found their way onto the canvases through colours and shapes. Each finished work is not only a journey taken but also a statement. ‘This is how I experienced it; this is where I ended up.’”
