Ten years ago, painter and illustrator Vincent Bakkum returned to the Netherlands after nearly three decades in Helsinki.

Bakkum continues to work with the traditional tools of his craft—canvas, paint and brushes—rather than the digital media commonly used in contemporary illustration. Yet he has never abandoned his identity as an illustrator. On the contrary, his work has become increasingly rich in detail and decorative expression, guided by his enduring fascination with aesthetics.

“I find inspiration everywhere—from the markets of Barcelona to the smallest details on a postcard. I believe our sense of beauty is shaped by the experiences of our youth. We spend the rest of our lives searching for that visual home—the sense of comfort and familiarity it brings.”
