Virve Lilja

2800

By intuition, and with some guidance, a new kind of image has formed on the canvas. In the aftermath of the previous “ink stain test” paintings, there is also a strong movement towards ambiguous, partly psychological works. The old truth that a work is only complete when someone looks at it holds true for these paintings. How interesting it is to see how different perceptions and cultural differences affect the way a picture is seen!

Virve Lilja (b.1968) is a visual artist living in Kangasala. She is interested in the interface between the abstract and figurative painting and in the perception of the image. Her works often have a psychological layer. For Lilja, the process of making art is a way of organizing the world into a clearer form. Lilja’s main methods are painting and printmaking using a variety of techniques, from small scale to monumental public works.
